Call for Applications: CIFAR-SNSF's Social Sciences and Humanities Winter School

In partnership with the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF),  the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) is holding a Winter School for senior PhD students and postdoctoral fellows in the social sciences and humanities (SSH), under the theme Using Empirical Data in the Social Sciences & Humanities: Ethics, Policy and the Arts.

Emphasizing the use of empirical research, the school will explore critical questions in SSH as well as real-world implications for and inclusion of policy and the arts. The participants will engage in interactive lectures from leading researchers, artists, and other practitioners, network with peers, receive mentorship and professional development opportunities, such as navigating an academic career in SSH and practicing interdisciplinary research.

  • Target Group: senior PhD students and postdoctoral fellows in the social sciences and humanities (SSH)
  • Fields: Anthropology, Art History, Classics, Cultural Studies, Digital Humanities, Economics, Education, Environmental Humanities, Film Studies, Gender Studies, Geography, History, Indigenous Studies, International Relations, Law, Linguistics, Literature, Media & Communication Studies, Migration & Ethnic Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Public Policy, Religion, Sociology and Visual Arts
  • When & Where: The School will be held in St. Gallen, Switzerland from January 26-28, 2027.
  • Application: Applicants are required to submit a CV as well as a short discussion of their research, how the school would benefit their future career, and their interest in participating in an inter- and trans-disciplinary forum.
  • Funding: With support from SNSF, CIFAR will cover the travel and accommodation costs for selected researchers.
  • Deadline: October 28, 2026
